About Us

Senior Action Network (SAN) is a citywide federation of senior organizations organizing to improve the lives of San Francisco's seniors and all of our city's residents. We are an umbrella coalition of over 140 member groups representing over 30,000 seniors. SAN has activists from every neighborhood, ethnicity, linguistic background, economic status and cultural identity that the diverse city of San Francisco represents.

Since 1990, SAN has made critical strides in improving some of our society's most pressing problems, including health care, crime prevention, transportation, pedestrian safety and housing.

Through leadership development and community organizing, SAN empowers seniors to identify, research and implement solutions to the pressing daily needs and inequities we face.

Our History

In early 1990 the steering committee of SAN was formed by community leaders who wanted to develop a way for Seniors to come together from all ethnic backgrounds, neighborhoods, and income levels on issues of common concern.

In October 1990, SAN sponsored a founding forum. The response was overwhelming. Over 250 Seniors participated in the initial founding forum and three issue committees were established - Crime Prevention, Health Care, and Transportation.

Since then SAN has grown to represent over 29,000 Seniors from 143 member organizations. Our monthly general meetings are translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Russian. At these meetings we review the status of our activities and vote on new issue campaigns.
