Senior Action Network has been a leading advocate for pedestrian’s rights since 1992.  Our Pedestrian Safety Program, SF Walks, strives to make San Francisco a safe, walkable city for seniors, people with disabilities and all pedestrians.

Many of SAN’s pedestrian safety projects intertwine its’ Pedestrian Safety Program and Senior University.  A characteristic example of this is the SApedestrianN’s Neighborhood Pedestrian Safety Campaign for Visitacion Valley and Bayview/Hunter Point.  As part of the community outreach element of the project, SAN trained seniors living in the Visitacion Valley and Bayview Hunters Point district on the essential elements of community organizing in its Senior University Program.  The training included how to conduct an effective meeting, public speaking, lobbying and leadership. After the training, senior graduates participated in the project by performing such tasks as flyering, staffing community meetings, phone banking, mailings, and holding demonstrations.

Last year Senior Action Network launched a city wide pedestrian safety campaign called, “Sidewalks are for Pedestrian”.  The goal of this campaign is to:  Educate, Enforce, and Protect pedestrians’ rights.   With the support of the Municipal Transportation Agency, MTA; the Department of Public Health, DPH; the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and WALK SF the campaign focused on bicycle riding on the sidewalks.  Last year SAN held a series of public demonstrations stressing

how this activity is a hazard to seniors, persons with disabilities and children.  This year with grant funding from the Department of Public Health, SAN is conducting a study on the effectiveness of education and enforcement regarding bicycle riding on the sidewalk and pedestrian safety.      For more details…..
